It was his senior year in high school. He was playing on the varsity football team and had been across town at an away game that had run into double overtime. When the bus finally dumped the players back at the high school it was after midnight, and Thomas, their next-door neighbour, was standing in the parking lot. At that moment, Angelico knew something terrible had happened.

There’d been a fire. An accident, Thomas explained. By the time the fire department had arrived, there was little that could be done. Thomas had cradled Angelico in his arms as he shared the gruesome details. Papa had been at Thomas’ playing cards and smoking cigars when they’d noticed the fire. He had perished while trying to get to Michaela and Victorina, the twins in the back bedroom. Nonna and Mamma never came out of the house, probably incapacitated from the smoke.

In that one fateful night, all of Angelico’s family had died while he’d been gone, unable to protect them, unable to save them…
